Customer Challenge

We needed to help our client design an auxiliary converter for use on railways in India, and consequently cater for a power load capacity of 265kVA.

The client also needed the auxiliary converter to be compact, withstand extreme temperatures and be cost effective.

Scope

  • To design auxiliary converter as a platform solution that can be used across various future trains/platforms
  • Concept design and review through to preliminary design review and /detailed design review.
  • Perform design simulations and create design documents.

Solution

  • Create a full feasibility study of the given concept.
  • Create preliminary and detailed designs.
  • Work in constant collaboration with cross function teams for components design and selection.

Features

  • The converter was developed to serve the Indian railway’s auxiliary power demands for AC, light, and fan loads inside the train.
  • It had a compact design for underslung mounting.
  • The design had high-power performance which could cope with the extreme environmental conditions of Indian weather.

Benefits

  • Our collaborative design can be used as a platform solution across all future train projects
  • It has a High Electrical Power capacity of 265 kVA and serves all IR demands in diverse segments.
  • The bulk of the design was delivered by Quest Global and customer teams in India.
  • Electrical simulations, harness design, 3D design and drawings for all levels to production were developed to show the components working.
