March 7, 2013, Bangalore

QuEST Global concluded an exclusive technical conference ‘CAE Colloquium 2013’ on Computation Aero Heat Transfer & Structures on 6th March 2013 at Le MERIDIEN HOTEL, Bangalore. The conference was attended by technical representatives from the CAE Industry, Government and Academia.

Eminent senior scientists and engineers of the industry including Boeing, GTRE (Gas Turbine Research Establishment, DRDO), NAL (National Aerospace Laboratories), ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency), Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, Innovent, NAFEMS, SAE etc. presented their view points on the latest trends in this highly technical arena, and shared their research, knowledge and ideas on the new and emerging technologies for aerospace applications, propulsion systems, industrial power generation and transportation disciplines. Â

The event kick started with the lighting of the lamp ceremony by Mr Sundararajan (Head, Technology Excellence Group, QuEST Global), Dr Mani Subramanian (Vice President, QuEST Global) and Mr. T.C Ramesh (General Manager, Technology Excellence Group, QuEST Global) which was followed by the introductory speech by Dr Mani Subramanian. He shared his insights on QuEST Global and this initiative of organising the colloquium. The event is titled ‘colloquium’ instead of a ‘conference’ as it was a gathering of minds and people with a similar mindset, viewpoint, with intent to share knowledge.

Dr K P Singh, Technical adviser (Aero), ADA, who was the first speaker of the event, shared his views on how CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is vital in the field of aircraft designing and is also instrumental in saving time and money which are valuable commodities. He gave a sneak peak in to the history of ADA and also its role in developing India’s first indigenous LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) and a role of CFD in it.

Dr Bala K Bharadwaj (Managing Director, Research & Technology, Boeing India) threw light on “The Role of Computer Aided Engineering” in Aerospace. He started his talk with a snapshot of Boeing aeroplanes, and elaborated how the company had gone about making their contribution by making a difference in the field of aviation in tandem with the evolution of computers and technology. Mr. Bharadwaj, highlighted the important CAE technology and shared several interesting fact about the aircraft construction and design industry.  He mentioned how the industry depended solely on the designers intuition and how many lives were lost in the history of aviation due to some miscued calculations done by the designers. Today however, CAE with its simulation technology has significantly reduced this risk, thereby making air travel much more safe and secure. Mr. Bharadwaj stressed on the need for the present day engineering students to devote their time understanding the physics and science involved with aerodynamics and aviation rather than learning to run a few CAE codes. He vouched to devote equal importance to both wind tunnel testing and CAE technology as both according to him were the need of the hour for the industry.

Mr. Rajeev Lochan (Group Director, GTRE) shared his view point and experience on the “Overview of Structural Analysis for Critical Rotor Components in Aero Engines” by citing the example of the huge role played by CAE on Kaveri engine development. Dr Byji Varghese another senior scientist from NAL spoke about the “Development of design methodology for joints between composites to metal structure in a wing subjected to thermal and aerodynamic loads”.

The audience also got the opportunity to listen to some other eminent spokespeople such as Mr.  Ganesh HN (Chief Technical Officer, Innovent), Dr. Vaman Kulkarni (Engineering Manager, Honeywell Technology Solutions, India), Dr. Elangovan (Country Head & Technical Director, NAFEMS India operations) etc during the event who shared their knowledge on the increasing importance of CAE.Â

Mr Sudhakara Reddy Varikuti (Technical Manager, CAE analysis, Rolls-Royce Operations India Pvt Ltd) who was felicitated by the QuEST Global team summed up the session by providing a broad overview of the segment.

The Colloquium ended with the question answer session. The QuEST Global team honoured each speaker with commendations for sharing their valuable knowledge and insights with the audience.
