Smooth and efficient functioning of airlines is governed by the commercial aero engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) function. The MRO market is estimated to reach $32.1 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.6% over the next eight years. Technological advancements for lower emissions and less maintenance; use of advanced materials; growing prevalence of prognostic, diagnostic, and Parts Manufacturer Approval parts; and demand for more fuel-efficient engines are some of the factors that account for influencing the commercial aero engine MRO market. By 2023, Asia is likely to become the largest MRO market with the market size reaching $24.3 billion.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) owing to their unique expertise in their own products provide a single-source solution for their customers’ maintenance needs with support programs. This need for specialized knowledge for conducting repairs and their overbearing influence on the aftermarket make the engine OEMs dominant players. However, with their own resource and cost constraints in sustaining their business efficiency, these engine OEMs outsource most of the engine MRO as against any other market. As much as 33% of engine MRO is outsourced to different region and about 80% of work is expected to be outsourced by 2020.
