The Scope

This project involved the design of an Auxiliary Converter as a platform solution. The converter needed to be future-proof to adapt for any further requirements as and when new rolling stock was introduced to networks and it required to be adaptable to use across various platforms.

QuEST Global was required to work with the customer from concept design and review through to PDR/DDR for projects in India. The solution needed design simulations and create design documents to simplify this part of the project timeline.

The Solution

Initially, we completed a feasibility study of the given concept in order to determine how this would work and how it could be adapted in future as needs changed.

We developed a solution that creates both preliminary and detailed designs to the customers’ requirements. The Auxiliary Converter also allows constant collaboration with cross-function teams for component design and solution, allowing the business to optimise this process, reducing time and costs.

Features

  • Extensive: the converter was developed to serve the power demands for AC, lighting and fans inside the trains
  • Discreet:  the auxiliary converter has a compact design for underslung mounting
  • Strong: it was developed for high-power performance, and is able to withstand the extreme environmental conditions of Indian weather

Benefits

  • Flexible: the design can be used as a solution across other train projects in the future regardless of the design and scope required for future trains
  • Adaptable: its power supply can cater for virtually all demands on the system, with a high electrical power capacity of 265kVA. This serves all IR demands in diverse segments
  • Collaborative: our worldwide footprint meant the design was developed close to the client, by QuEST and dedicated customer teams in India.
  • Multi-functional: This solution develops electrical simulations, harness design, and 3D designs and drawings for all levels to production.
