Customer Challenge

Creating Aero Engine Parts in Model Based Definition (MBD)

A major aero engine OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) entrusted QuEST with the launch of pilot project on MBD.

They needed support in creating component definition and capture design intent in Model Based Definitions to enable digital manufacturing of aero engine parts.

Scope

  • Creation of component definition and capture design intent in Model Based Definitions to enable digital manufacturing of aero engine parts.

Solution

  • Master/Parametric models in UG NX
  • Product Manufacturing Information Definition

Features

Features

  • MBD are linked to the manufacturing stage models in team center
  • Any changes/modifications carried out shall be reflected in the stage models
  • MBD parts are compatible to be able to generate 3D PDF files

Benefits

  • Customer bandwidth improved due to development of 3 customer approved checkers for MBD
  • Feedback provided to customer in establishing MBD standards and processes
  • Developed automation tools related to MBD

Results

  • Reduced component definition creation time compared to 2D definition
  • Time/cost of documenting a part reduced in downstream ME activity
  • Reuse of PMI 3D models for Structural Analysis, Inspection (CMM) and Manufacturing (CAM)
