The role of a modeling engineer is more an entry level job in the field of prototyping and simulation. However, it cannot be dismissed as a simple low-end job because it involves a huge amount of learning. It provides an opportunity for a freshly hired engineering graduate to get a feet of the prototyping and simulation industry.

It is definitely helpful if these students are able to work on atleast one CAD tool before they enter the, industry. This will help them in grasping things faster. However they are Indeed expected to have a complete understanding of the strength of materials, which is taught very well during their days as a mechanical engineering student.

A modeling engineer's career need not necessarily be domain specific in nature because most of his time and energy is spent towards .learning. As a result- it is during this time that a student begins to pick and chose domains of his preference for the future. The learning process is not domain-specific and tools are common for most domains. A student can use this knowledge to branch out into a domain of his choice in the future. Automobile and aviation are definitely the two most interesting domains today.

Now, the students have a choice when it comes to domain selection. For instance, due to the excessive use of steel, the construction industry is presently opting for a design related activities prior to execution.

A student is already well groomed during his final year at college on various aspects of engineering. The things that are learnt during his tenure as a modeling engineer will only add to his skills. Today, software companies are even giving good education - to improve the skills of their employees, especially during the training period.
